Types of Accounting Jobs
While there are a number of different accounting positions out there, we’ve broken down a few of the top accounting positions and what job duties accompany their titles.
Staff Accountant
A staff accountant works in the accounting department within a given business, or they may work at an accounting firm. Responsibilities for staff accountants include maintaining the ledgers, reviewing financial statements, providing audit assistance, assisting with budgeting processes, preparing reports, and reconciling accounts receivable. Most staff accountant jobs require at least a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and two years of professional job experience to be considered for the role. Candidates must also possess a working knowledge of the GAAP, as many of their job responsibilities will include ensuring GAAP compliance. Those who have strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills excel in these positions.
Senior Accountant
These accountants have similar responsibilities to staff accountants; however, they are more senior-level employees who deal more with “big picture” problems within a company. Senior accounts are typically responsible for creating an accurate financial statement for the company, providing accurate and timely operating information, collaborating with executive team members, and more. In fact, senior accountants often have a say in how the company spends money and provide recommendations for how to improve financial reports through proper budgetary considerations. Candidates are typically required to have experience as a financial controller or senior-level accountant in order to be considered for placement.
Accounts Payable Specialist
An accounts payable specialist is responsible for ensuring vendors get paid for any services or products they provided. Responsibilities typically include processing invoices, auditing credit card transactions and statements, answering vendor questions, reconciling statements, processing 1099 statements, and processing and distributing checks. While a college degree in accounting is preferred for this role, an accounts payable specialist may be eligible for consideration with just a high school diploma. Those who have exceptional organization and time management skills tend to well within these roles.
Tax Accountant
These are the professionals we see each year to prepare and file taxes with the Internal Revenue Service. Tax accountants help individuals and companies prepare their financial and income tax statements. They must be incredibly well-versed in researching, studying, and interpreting tax law as it applies to individuals and corporations. A bachelor’s degree, as well as three years’ professional experience, is typically required in order to become a tax accountant. Individuals who possess strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills are best suited for the position.
